One of the greatest traditions of the Christmas season is the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, which began at the Christmas Eve services at King's College, Cambridge, England.  As the creator of this service pointed out in the first printed program, the "pattern and strength" of the service resides with the lessons themselves, and not with the music: "The main theme of the service is the development, through the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, of the loving purpose of God in sending his Son. The carols and hymns are simply here to guide us in our response to the Word of God's promise."
